My Weekly Review

This week we had double coupons and a great cereal promo!  For 20 boxes of cereal I paid $21.80.  They are on sale for $1.50 if you buy 10 at a time and they had coupons taped to them for $1.00 off of 2, making them $1.00 a box.  I bought 3 bottles of Downy total care that is on closeout for $5.50, used $1.00 off coupons and doubled them for a total of $11.31.  Suave is on sale for $2.25 and I had $.75 off and doubled them making the total $2.52.  Soup at hand is on 10 for $10.00 or $1.00 each and I have $.50 off one and doubled those making them FREE!.  You have to pay tax so the total for them is $.09!  The chocolate chips I needed and had $.50 off, doubled those making them $1.99 each.  The Soft Scrub wipes we have $1.00 off, doubled that, final price $1.59.  Lean Cuisine are on sale for $1.88 and we have $1.00 off of 3, doubled those so I paid $1.21 each.  Toaster strudels are my son's favorite and I had coupons expiring yesterday for $.55 so I got those for $1.74 each.
Total for my week including all the other double deals that I listed was $90.37 and I saved $187.17.    I spent more then I usually do in one week but overall for the month I spent $202.37.  I saved $687.24.  Overall a pretty good month!

Double Ideas for Albertsons

The fusion razors were on closeout for $5.49 and in Sunday's coupons there are $4.00 off coupons so I got each of those for $1.49.  The Mr. Clean I had a $.75 off from Homemade Simple book and then we got Buy One bottle of cleaner, get a spray bottle of cleaner free so I combined the 2 and doubled the $.75 off.  The cleaner is $3.79 so I got it for $2.29 plus got the spray free!  The swiffer I had $1.00 off and B1G1 free so I ended up paying $1.99 for both!  The oxy was something my son had to have and I had $1.00 off and doubled it so I paid $2.99 for it.  Total for this trip was $11.90.

Double Coupon Ideas

I had $1.00 off coupons for each of these from coupons.com and I doubled all of them making my total $3.35!

Double Ideas for Albertsons

Today is the last day for using your double coupons.  This is one of the deals I did last night.  We have a coupon that expires tomorrow for $1.00 off magic erasers and then we got new coupons on Sunday for buy one get one free magic erasers.  So the scenario is buy 1 magic eraser for $3.35, use the $1.00 off and double it making the total $1.35 plus tax and then get the other magic eraser FREE!  The swiffer refill we had $.50 off so I doubled it and it was on close out for $2.50 so I paid $1.50 plus tax!  My total for everything was $5.58.  Have fun shopping!

Awesome Jet Dry Deal at Albertsons!

jet dry
Thanks to Cheryl for passing this great deal along!!!!
I’ve got a money maker for you! Jet-Dry products have a catalina deal running currently . Buy one of the tagged items and you get a cat for $1.25 OYNSO. If you go here and sign up you can get coupons for .75/1 Jet-Dry. Print  twice. Then it will give you an option to get more coupons (I don’t recall the exact wording.) If you click there you can print two more coupons. Jet-Dry products aren’t on sale, however I discovered that instead of printing one catalina, it’s printing TWO!
Here’s what to do:
  • Buy one 4.22 oz Jet Dry (UPC051700365654)  $3.49 (Double check your local price — I don’t know if it varies by store!)
  • Use .75/1 coupon and Doubler -$1.50
  • Pay $1.99
  • Get TWO catalinas for $1.25 OYNSO
  • $.51 MONEY MAKER!
Do NOT buy more than 1 Jet-Dry in a transaction. It will only print TWO for the first item and then one for each item after.
P.S. This also works with the 8.45 oz Jet-Dry Dishwasher Cleaner (UPC051700766314). It’s just not a money maker. They are $4.99 at my store which makes them $.99 after the coupon, doubler and cats. (Which is still pretty fabuless, especially if your dishwasher is orangey inside from spaghetti sauce like mine!)

Coupon Basics 3

When do you use your coupons?
This is the best part!  In past years people would get the coupons out of the paper, make their meal plan for a week or two and then check to see if they have any coupons for the items they needed.
What we are teaching is a whole different way of thinking!  Don't feel bad if it takes a few days (or weeks!) to change how you think!
What we do is wait for a sale and then we use our coupons to get the best possible deal.  Example:  The ads for Albertsons and Smith's come out every Wednesday.  We go through the ad and find everything that is on sale that we have a coupon for.  Example:  Toilet paper is on sale for $6.99 for a pack of 24, (normally priced $11.99) and we have a coupon for $1.00 off so now we only pay $5.99.  Another example:  Albertsons has a sale on Kelloggs cereal - 4 boxes for $10.00 or $2.50 each.  It says in the ad that if you buy 4 boxes at the same time you will get $4.00 off automatically at the register which makes them 4 boxes for $6.00 or $1.50 each.  THEN you lay down four $1.00 off coupons (because you can use 1 coupon per item) and it takes your total down to $2.00 for 4 boxes of cereal or $.50 a box!  When is the last time you paid $.50 for anything let alone a box of cereal?  This is why you want multiple copies of the newspaper so you have 5 coupons for each item.
So instead of just buying what you need for 7 or 14 days, you will stockpile products when they are on sale and then you will not purchase them again for a few months or until they go on sale again. You were just able to save 80% on cereal so if you buy 20 boxes you will pay $10.00 which is what you would have paid for 3 boxes at normal, everyday prices.
Then if that isn't exciting enough, every so often Albertsons will put out Twice the Value Coupons (Double Coupons) which mean that we are able to double any manufacturers coupon up to $1.00 in value.   So taking the example of the toilet paper above, you would now double your $1.00 coupon and pay $4.99 for the toilet paper.  Other example for cereal, you would double 2 of your $1.00 cereal coupons and only have to pay tax for the cereal! (Which would be tax on $4.00 since the store is reimbursed the value of the manufacturers coupons)

By the way, you can only use 3 double coupons per shopping trip!  That means that when we get double coupons you can purchase your items then go out to your car and come back into the store.  You CANNOT do multiple transactions at one time.  You MUST only use 3 coupons and leave the store and come back in.

Coupon Basics 2

Next is how to organize your coupons?
When you get several papers at once (5 Sunday papers) the easiest way to cut them out is to take each insert, separate it into separate pages and lay all 5 on top of each other.  Straighten the pages and then staple the coupon, making sure not to staple through the barcode.  Then you cut around the outside (leaving about 1/8" extra around the edges) so you only cut each coupon out once!  Plus then your coupons that are all the same are stapled together so you can find them easier and if you only need 1 or 2 you can just pull them off the top of the stack and the others are still stapled together!
Next is the binder!  I have found that there are many ways that people organize themselves but the way that I like the best is my CaseIt double ring binder that zips closed.  It has 2 separate rings so I put all my non-food coupons on the left ring and my food coupons on the right ring.  I use photo page protectors so I have 4 different pockets on each page.  I put the index tabs on so everything is easy to find.

     My categories for non-foods are:
Laundry and Dish: meaning any coupon pertaining to doing my laundry or my dishes.
Eyes and Face: coupons for contacts, makeup, makeup remover etc.
Mouth and Hair:  toothpaste, shampoo, gel, hairspray, etc.
Personal:  All other personal items, razors, handsoap, bodywash, deoderant, etc.
Medication:  All first aid items and over the counter medicines.
Paper products: toilet paper, paper towels, kleenex, tin foil, saran wrap, paper plates, napkins, etc.
Cleaning: toilet cleaner, dusting supplies, febreeze, etc.
Home:  Batteries, air fresheners, candles, hornet spray, insect repellent, etc.
Pets: Dog and cat food coupons

     My categories for food:
Beverages: juice, pop, milk, ensure, etc.
          Cereal:  self explanitory!
Canned food: anything that comes in a can or is shelf stable that is not in another category
Condiments:  ketchup, mustard, salad dressings, BBQ sauce, relish, pickles, etc.
Dairy: cheese, gogurts, yogurt, milk, ice cream
Grains: breads, mac and cheese, pasta salad, crackers, hamburger helper, nuts, etc.
Snacks: candy, popcorn, chips, pudding, granola bars, anything that I think Snack when I see it
          Meats:  lunchmeat, hotdogs, brats,
Frozen: Anything from frozen dept that isn't in another category
Baking:  Cake mixes, flour, sugar, oils, spices, basically anything you would use to cook with.

You can use these as starting points and if you find that you don't need a category then change it or take it out.  Some people need baby products as a separate category and some don't have pets so just change it to fit your needs!  Also for some of the cateogories I have 2 or 3 sheet protectors so I can spread my coupons out a little so they are easier to find.
Also between the two rings I have 4 folders, one for each of my main stores.  Albertsons, Smiths, Walgreens, and then an extra one to hold coupons that I need to refile and my shopping list.

Coupon Basics

Welcome to Coupon Basics!  Many years ago when I graduated from high school and moved out on my own my mom would send me coupons.  I would get them in the mail, look through them and think,' 75 cents off the most expensive laundry detergent.  I normally buy the no name brand and it is $3.00 cheaper so why would I use this coupon, it is still more then I can afford! '  What I didn't know then was how to stockpile my coupons, wait for the products to come on sale and then use them to get the best deal.  That is what I will be teaching you about but first we need to cover some necessary items.

First: Where do you get coupons?
Newspaper- The Sunday newspaper has coupon inserts almost everyweek (excluding holiday weekends) and they are really the best source.  Consider buying multiple Sunday papers (I buy 5) so you can stockpile by using 5 coupons at once.
Internet - There are several good websites that you can print your own coupons from.  Just make sure that you never photocopy them since each barcode is only used once and the store will only get paid for one coupon.  Manufacturers websites will sometimes have coupons to get you to try their products.
Tear pads and peelies- This are found at the store by the products.  Peelies are actually on the product and when you buy it the cashier should peel it off and give you the discount.
Friends and Neighbors- There are many people who get the newspaper and never use the coupons so ask around and see if anyone will save them for you!

Cambells Soup for 20 cents a can! Chicken Noodle and Tomato only.

soupAlbertsons has a sale on Campbells Chicken noodle ans Tomato soup right now for .50 cents a can….a rather good price.  But the deal gets even better, right now they have a catalina running for every  15 dollars of soup you buy you will get back a $5 Catalina ( a coupon good toward your next purchase, that you can use like cash)
So here is the deal scenario:
  • buy 30 can of Campbell’s Chicken Noodle or Tomato soup ( can only be these 2 kinds or the Catalina will not print)
  • Your total will come to $15 plus tax
  • use 7 coupons from the 9/13 smart source for .40 cents off 4 cans ( will take off $2.80)
  • Use 3 Albertsons twice the value coupons ( will take off another $1.20)
  • Your total will now be $11.00 plus Tax  for 30 cans of soup ( which make it about 36 cents a can)
  • After you pay a $5 catalina will print
  • SO after the catalina it is LIKE paying $6.00 for 30 cans of soup (  that is only .20 cents a can)
This is a VERY VERY thrifty price on soup and a great price to stock up.  The catalina runs till 9/26 so if your store is out you can always get a rain check.
